Biographical Sketch

Garry D. Greenbowe is an accomplished artist who has worked in oil, acrylic, collage and other media. For the past 25 years, his passion for watercolors has been his major focus. He believes watercolor is the most challenging medium. He is inspired predominately by landscape and marine subjects, occasionally including people or wildlife.

His spontaneous and direct "loaded brush" approach to watercolor captures the immediacy of the subject. His work has been described as the natural progression from Winslow Homer, moving a 19th century style into a 21st century approach. His method of "wet into wet", lights into darks, darks into light, fusing of color rather than the earlier glazing techniques gives his work an emotional depth.

Mr. Greenbowe is a self-taught painter who received his bachelors degree in art education from the State University of New York. He taught drawing and painting at The Darrow School, a private prep school in the Berkshires and was a watercolor tutor for the Empire State College-SUNY in Albany. In his earlier abstract period some of his paintings were used in commercial rug designs.

His work has been displayed in one-man shows, juried shows, group shows and galleries, predominately in the Northeast, California and the Southwest. These venues include the Berkshire Museum, the Lenox Art Union, the Munson (Massachusetts) Arts Council, and the Stable Art Gallery in Scottsdale Arizona. Although he spent a year in Heidelberg, Germany and traveled throughout Europe, he considers his paintings American watercolors with virtually no European influence.
